The role of the baby is not necessarily a dysfunctional one. The role becomes dysfunctional if the Baby is not allowed to grow up. The last child born is often given preferential status and may be given extra attention by everyone in the family. The baby often quickly learns that people will do things for them just as long as they continue to act like a baby. As a result babies can become overly dependent as they grow older. In adulthood, the baby may play the role of helpless victim, expecting to be taken care of instead of assuming mature responsibilities.
